Ton Geers, woonachtig in Breugel, opent in De Kruisruimte in Eindhoven een wereld waarin een jaar lang experimenteren met vorm, materiaal en ritme samenkomt. Zijn reeks van 52 vliegers laat zien hoe nieuwsgierigheid, geduld en plezier in maken kunnen uitgroeien tot een verrassend geheel. Elke vlieger bouwt voort op de vorige, waardoor je als kijker bijna mee kunt bladeren door zijn proces. Je ziet hoe kleine verschuivingen nieuwe ideeën losmaken en hoe herhaling juist ruimte geeft om vrijer te denken. De keuze voor bamboe en Nepalees loktapapier geeft het werk een eigen karakter. Het materiaal vraagt om aandacht en zorg en dat voel je in elke vorm, lijn en structuur.
Van pixel naar papier
Voor Ton is dit project ook een manier om even afstand te nemen van de digitale precisie die zijn werk als creative director vaak vraagt. In plaats van pixels en schermen werkte hij een jaar lang met papier dat scheurt als je niet oplet en bamboe dat doet wat het zelf wil. Die eigenzinnigheid van het materiaal levert vormen op die nooit helemaal te sturen zijn en juist daardoor zo levendig worden. Het brengt een tastbare laag in de abstracte beeldtaal die hij onderzoekt en maakt de reeks tegelijk nieuw en vertrouwd.
Totems
Hoewel een vlieger traditioneel bedoeld is om te vliegen, speelt dat hier steeds minder de hoofdrol. Het object zelf, met zijn spanning tussen functie en expressie, werd voor Ton een speelveld om grenzen te verkennen. Dat is ook te zien in de negen nieuwe papiersculpturen, oftewel totems, die de ruimte innemen en niet bedoeld zijn om op te stijgen. Ze tonen hoe zijn onderzoek zich uitbreidt naar nieuwe vormen en maten zonder dat de lichtheid en openheid verloren gaan.
52 vliegers
Samen vormen de 52 vliegers een visuele reis door een jaar denken, bouwen, twijfelen en opnieuw beginnen. Het is een reeks die uitnodigt om langer te kijken, omdat elke vorm net anders is en toch deel uitmaakt van hetzelfde verhaal. In De Kruisruimte komt dat onderzoek prachtig samen. Niet een opdrachtgever maar het materiaal, de wind en Ton zelf bepalen hier de richting.
De expositie is van 6-14 december en biedt een intieme blik op hoe een beeldtaal kan groeien als je jezelf de ruimte geeft om te zoeken. De Kruisruimte vind je aan de Generaal Bothastraat 7-E in Eindhoven.

Ton Geers, who lives in Breugel, opens in De Kruisruimte in Eindhoven a world in which a year of experimenting with form, material and rhythm comes together. His series of 52 kites shows how curiosity, patience and the joy of making can grow into a surprising whole. Each kite builds on the previous one, allowing you as a viewer to almost leaf through his process. You see how small shifts spark new ideas and how repetition creates room to think more freely. The choice of bamboo and Nepali lokta paper gives the work its own character. The material demands attention and care, which you can feel in every form, line and structure.
From pixel to paper
For Ton, this project is also a way to step back from the digital precision that his work as a creative director often requires. Instead of pixels and screens, he spent a year working with paper that tears if you are not careful and bamboo that tends to follow its own will. That wilfulness of the material produces shapes that can never be fully controlled and that become lively precisely for that reason. It adds a tangible layer to the abstract visual language he explores and makes the series both new and familiar.
Totems
Although a kite is traditionally meant to fly, that becomes less central here. The object itself, with its tension between function and expression, became a playground for Ton to explore boundaries. This is also evident in the nine new paper sculptures, or totems, that occupy the space and are not intended to rise into the air. They show how his research expands into new forms and scales without losing lightness and openness.
52 kites
Together, the 52 kites form a visual journey through a year of thinking, building, doubting and starting again. It is a series that invites you to look longer, because each shape is slightly different yet part of the same story. In De Kruisruimte this exploration comes together beautifully. Not a client but the material, the wind and Ton himself determine the direction here.
